Kahlert scores the lone goal in the game, McFerran notches seventh shutout of the season
DEDHAM, Mass. – Junior Lotta Kahlert scored the only goal of the game and freshman Ayeisha McFerran posted her seventh shutout of the season as the ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Northeastern 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Dedham Field.
Â
"We are happy to come away with a win, but not happy with how we did it," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We lost focus and attention to our game plan and how we attack in the front half of the field. Our discipline should be much better at this stage of the season and we are very fortunate to have gotten away with this game. Credit to Northeastern in the way they played us."
Â
The Cardinals (10-5) broke through in the seventh minute of the game when senior Megan Anstotz sent a cross to junior Lotta Kahlert who connected on her third goal of the season.
Â
Northeastern (4-11) Â had a first-half scoring opportunity on its third corner of the game when Kristin Abreu fired a shot that got past McFerran, but sophomore Nicole Woods was there for a defensive save to hold the Huskies at bay.
Â
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting Northeastern 7-5 while the Huskies held a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
The Huskies went on the attack in the second half, outshooting the Cardinals 6-1 and owning a 2-1 edge in corners. In the final four minutes of regulation, Northeastern lifted goalkeeper Becky Garner in favor of an extra field player, but Louisville held strong, maintaining possession on its offensive end of the field.
Â
In the game, Northeastern held a 11-8 edge in shots and had six corners to Louisville's two. McFerran (10-5) collected two saves en route to her seventh shutout of the season. Garner had four stops in the game for the Huskies.
Â
Louisville will return to Trager Stadium for a three-day home stand which starts Sunday, Oct. 25 against Central Michigan at 1 p.m.
