Cards post eighth shutout of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The eighth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated visiting Central Michigan 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 11-5 while the Chippewas drop to 1-15 on the season.
Â
"It took a little while to get rolling today," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "In terms of goals that we set for ourselves on attack and defense, we really worked hard on some elements of our identity and our passing game and how hard we defend and we were able to achieve that. Unfortunately, we were not getting the results on the scoreboard as quickly as I would have liked. We had tons of opportunities today and I give Central Michigan loads of credit, they defended hard and their spirit was really difficult to break. At the end, to get the win is important for our program."
Â
The teams played through a scoreless first half in which the Cardinals outshot the Chippewas 13-0 and held an 8-0 edge in corners.
Â
Louisville continued to attack and broke through in the fifth minute of the second half when senior Elisa Garcia sent a penalty corner shot to the right side of the cage where freshman Tess Hannah connected on her fourth goal of the season to put the Cards on the scoreboard.
Â
The Cardinals held possession on their half of the field and struck again 12 minutes later on another penalty corner. This team, it was Hannah who sent the initial shot to the right post where sophomore Nicole Woods was waiting to collect her seventh goal of the season. She now stands atop Louisville's statistical leader with 18 points and is tied for the team lead with seven goals.
Â
Central Michigan's best scoring opportunity came with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game when the Chippewas were awarded a penalty corner and Garcia was issued a green card which left the Cardinals a player down for two minutes. Maude Stalars sent a penalty corner shot toward the upper left part of the cage, but freshman Ayeisha McFerran got her glove on it to hold the Chippewas at bay and preserve the shutout.
Â
Junior Erin McCrudden capped the scoring with 2:07 remaining in the game when she sent Garcia's penalty corner shot past Central Michigan goalkeeper Sadie Lynn Reynolds to increase the Cardinals' lead to 3-0.
Â
Freshman Ayeisha McFerran (11-5) posted two saves en route to her eighth shutout of the season. She is now tied for third on Louisville's list for season shutouts. In the game, Louisville outshot Central Michigan 26-2 and held a 21-2 advantage in corners.
