Nicole Woods scores a pair of goals to help Cards erase 2-0 deficit
NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore Nicole Woods scored a pair of goals and sophomore Stephanie Byrne added another to help the ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team overcome a 2-0 deficit and beat No. 13 Boston College 3-2 in the Cardinals' ACC regular season finale Friday afternoon at BC's Field Hockey Complex. The Cardinals improve to 9-5 on the season and 1-5 in ACC play while the Eagles drop to 7-7 (0-5 ACC).
Â
"It's great to get an ACC win on the board," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "All positional lines contributed and we played some great attacking hockey and absorbed a lot of pressure late in the game. We showed a lot of resilience today especially after two goals down in the first half. A number of players stepped up today which was also very encouraging."
Â
The teams played through 16 scoreless minutes before the Eagles capitalized on their first shot of the game with a goal from Elizabeth Dennehy to give Boston College a 1-0 lead at the 16:55 mark.
Â
Two minutes later, BC drew three straight penalty corners and broke through on the third one – this time, Frederique Haverhals connected on a feed from Eryn McCoy to increase the Eagles' lead to 2-0.
Â
The Cardinals responded with three unanswered goals in a four-minute span. Erin McCrudden got Louisville's second penalty corner started with a pass to senior Elisa Garcia who fed Woods for her fifth goal of the season to pull the Cards within a goal at the 25:01 mark in the game.
Â
Two minutes later, Garcia and Woods combined again on another corner to even the score at 2-2.
Â
Louisville struck again at the 29:07 mark when sophomore Sttephanie Byrne registered her team-best seventh goal of the season with an assist from junior Hailey Netherton to pull the Cardinals ahead 3-2.
Â
The Cards took the 3-2 lead into halftime after outshooting the Eagles 9-2, while the teams had three corners apiece in the first half.
Â
In the second half, Boston College increase its attack, gaining a 6-5 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corners, including one as time expired at the end of regulations. The Louisville defense  stood strong with freshman goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran picking up four saves as the Cards held on for the 3-2 win.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Boston College 14-8 while the Eagles held a 6-3 advantage in corners. McFerran (9-5) had four saves while Leah Settipane (7-7) had eight for BC.
Â
Louisville will face Northeastern Sunday at 1 p.m.
