Cardinals earn a point in ACC play with a tie against Duke
LOUISVILLE, KY. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team handed played Duke (7-4-4, 1-2-3) to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon in Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals had an impressive defensive effort, junior goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin finished with a career-high 10 saves.Â
"I knew we would be physically and emotionally drained from Thursday," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "So we made sure we got after them from the mental toughness standpoint. I thought we were mentally tough to hang in there against a very good Duke team. We minimized quality chances they were able to get against us. Taylor Bucklin has proven she is a big time goalkeeper. She has kept us in some big time games. I thought we managed the overtime well, I told the kids we either want to win it or tie it. You have to understand how to do that when you're in overtime. And looking back with four points on a Carolina-Duke weekend, that's pretty awesome."
Duke took control early in the first half and the Cards found themselves defending most of the first half. Forward Taylor Racioppi had eight of Duke's 14 shots in the first half. Two of her shots were on goal, but Bucklin was able to collect both shots and finish the half scoreless.
The Blue Devils finished the first half with a 14-2 shot advantage and a 3-1 corner kick advantage. Bucklin finished with five saves in the first half.Â
In the second half the Cardinal defense was able to limit shots by the Blue Devils. Most of the half was played through the midfield. The Blue Devils had six shots with three on goal. Louisville finished with two shots but both went wide and the Cards were unable to capitalize off of the three corner kicks.
Neither team was really able to produce anything offensively in the first overtime period. Rachel Avant had a shot go wide, while Duke had on blocked and another sail high. In the second overtime period, Duke had a dangerous series with two corner kicks in a row but Bucklin was able to grab the save in the 102nd minute. The Blue Devils had a final chance in the 107th minute but once again Bucklin was there for the save.
Â
Duke finished the match with a 24-6 shot advantage and an 8-4 corner kick advantage. The Blue Devils also finished with 10 shots on goal while the Cards did not put a shot on goal. Bucklin finished with 10 saves, including two in overtime to preserve her fourth shutout of the season.Â
The Cardinals (7-5-2, 3-2-1 ACC) will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17 as they host No. 2 Florida State in Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium at 7:00 p.m. The game will be senior night for the Cardinals, honoring five seniors in a pregame ceremony. The game will be televised on ESPN3.Â
