SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's golf team compiled the best third-round score of the tournament, continuing its momentum from the second round, to ride to its third-consecutive Cardinal Cup title on Tuesday at the UofL Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
Louisville's black team, winners of both tournaments this season, shot a 7-over-par 295 for the day and finish with a six-shot advantage over Memphis. The Cardinals utilized nine birdies in the final round to overtake Middle Tennessee State, which held a nine-shot lead, but finished fifth in the standings after a 32-over-par 320.
"I think it just sets the tone for the year," head coach Courtney Trimble said of the win. "We didn't have our best golf today, and we gave some shots away down the stretch and they know that. We're satisfied that we won, but we know we can be a lot better. That's a sign of a mature team.
"Certainly, we're happy to get the victory because we didn't play well down the stretch, but we're really looking forward to building off the two wins."
Louisville, which now has won seven titles under Trimble, continues its fall schedule Monday, Sept. 22-24, at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colo.
One of the biggest contributing factors, Emily Haas shot her second-consecutive 1-under-par 71 to move into fourth in the individual standings. After logging a birdie on No. 2, her first hole of the day, she bogeyed No. 3 and finished the front nine with back-to-back birdies. The senior went even on the back nine and carded a 4-over-par 220 for the tournament.
"It was her putting," Trimble said of Haas' improvement over the course of the tournament. "She didn't putt very well in the first round, and she played the last 36 holes beautifully. She never gives up, fights hard, and expects to do well every time she tees it up, and she brings that to the rest of the team."
Teammate Katie Mitchell also improved on her Monday standing, logging a 2-over-par 73, to place fifth overall. With her parents on hand from Jacksonville, Fla., the redshirt junior notched a pair of birdies on the front nine to for a 1-under-par 35.
Katie Petrino placed 11th, and Louise Oxner rounded out the Cardinals' top four scorers with a 14th-place showing.
Louisville's red team tied for sixth in the standings following an 18-over-par 306 in the final round.
Sara Karlsson and Shannon Gramley each finished in the top 25, while freshman Molly Skapik took 26th overall. Karlsson tallied two birdies through her first four holes, before encountering four bogeys on the back nine, en route to a 14th-place showing. Gramley opened the day with a birdie on her first hole and finished in 18th.
