The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Middle Tennessee 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals improve to 14-5 on the season.
"I think this is what good teams do, they bounce back from an emotional loss," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were coming off of a match (against Texas Tech) that we felt we could win, but extenuating circumstances caused us to lose. Good teams bounce back from that. This is a team that we had to come back from behind to win 4-3 at National indoor 4-3, just two months ago. To beat them 7-0 really showed the growth and maturity of this team."
The Cardinals took the doubles point to start the match. Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri defeated Aaron Jumonville and Yannick Born 8-3 at No. 1 and Albert Wagner and Chris Simich also won 8-3 against Sam Matheson and David Fox at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Cards. Alex Gornet and Jeff Brown closed completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory over Victor Hoang and Ettore Zito at No. 3.
In singles action, Gornet won the Cards' second point at No. 4 against Aaron Jumonville 6-2, 6-0. Stiefelmeyer defeated Ettore Zito 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 to bring Louisville up 3-0. Chris Simich secured the win for the Cards at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Victor Hoang. Michael Lippens won 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 over Sam Matheson at No. 5 and Albert Wagner defeated David Fox 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2. Van Damrongsri closed out the match with a 6-7 (3-7), 7-6(8-6), 10-4 over Yannick Born at No. 6.
