LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 16th-ranked Louisville men's soccer team never found its rhythm in a 3-0 loss to No. 5 Indiana on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The result was the third straight loss for the Cardinals, who fell to 5-4-1 overall and have managed just one goal in the current stretch. It is the longest losing skid for Louisville since dropping four straight in 2008, a season in which they rebounded to advance to the NCAA Championship. Indiana improved to 7-1-3 overall while extending its unbeaten streak to six straight matches.
"We have to fight our way out of this. We have to maintain a positive attitude, be willing to battle and accept where we are because of what we've done. At the same time, we can't act like victims," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "Not scoring goals is a big issue right now. At times, we move the ball very well and you'd say tonight that we had some pretty good opportunities to score goals. On the other side, I thought Indiana took advantage of their chances."
Indiana scored its first goal of the night in the 37th minute when Grant Lillard connected on a header from inside the box after a long throw-in from Jamie Vollmer along the right side of the field. The goal was the second of the season for Lillard.
Following the halftime break, the Hoosiers wasted little time adding to the advantage as Vollmer delivered his third goal of the season on a header from 10 yards out on a ball served into the box from 30 yards up field along the left side by Patrick Doody. Less than eight minutes later, Indiana converted its final goal of the night when Andrew Oliver scored his first of the season working the ball inside the right post from eight yards away.
The Hoosiers ended the night with a 13-12 edge in shots, including a 7-6 advantage on goal. The Cardinals had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, Louisville will play its second straight top 10 opponent with an important ACC matchup against No. 6 Notre Dame on Friday at 7 p.m., ET in South Bend, Ind. The Cardinals' next home match is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m., ET when Florida Gulf Coast visits Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
