TULSA, Okla. - University of Louisville senior Sebastian Stiefelmeyer has advanced to the semifinals of the ITA All-American National Championships after posting two wins on Saturday afternoon.
"The journey continues for Sebastian," said UofL assistant coach Jakob Gustafsson. "He was able to carry a high level of tennis throughout the day and showed great determination coming back in his second match. It was a very physical day for him out there. Now it's time to rest and come back hungry tomorrow. "
Stiefelmeyer, No. 110 in the ITA singles rankings, started by defeating New Mexico's No. 101 Samir Iftikhar 6-1, 7-6(1) in the round of 16. He went on to beat Tulane's 98th ranked Dominik Koepfer 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Stiefelmeyer will face Virginia's Thai-Son Kwiatkowski Sunday morning in the semifinals.
"This tournament started with 300 of the best Division I tennis players. Now four are left and one of them is Sebastian," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "He has eclipsed our best All-American finish ever which was a quarterfinal finish by the great Austen Childs. He is two wins away for a national championship. I want to acknowledge our strength and fitness coach, Zach Farrell, who has prepared him for seven grueling matches in six days."
