LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 5 Louisville men's soccer team allowed a goal late in the first half and was never able to find the equalizer in a 1-0 loss to Ohio State on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Yianni Sarris connected on a shot from just outside the box at the 33:52 mark to put Ohio State (3-3-3) up 1-0 and the Buckeyes never looked back. The result not only marked the first time the Cardinals (5-2-1) have lost in five matches at the newly opened Lynn Stadium, but it was also the first time Louisville had trailed at home in 2014. The loss also snapped the Cardinals' four-match winning streak.
"I thought early on we lacked intensity, a sharpness, a focus," Louisville head coach Ken Lolla said. "I don't think the attitude really was good early. Things like out re-pressing are what define us, and early on you could see it wasn't good enough. We weren't sharp enough in the final third, and although we had a lot of possession of the ball, the possession didn't result in enough quality chances and we didn't take them very well. Unfortunately, that really didn't change throughout the game. I thought it was probably our poorest performance to date, and it shows where we are, that we have a lot of growth as a team."
The Cardinals maintained possession through most of the night but could not capitalize on any of their chances. Louisville finished the match with a 15-6 shot advantage, but only four of the Cardinals' chances were on goal. Louisville also finished with a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Joachim Ball (Villingen-Schwenninge, Germany) finished with two saves for the Cardinals, while Ohio State's Alex Ivanov ended the night with three saves. The Buckeyes were also credited with a team save in the first half.
The Cardinals will hit the road for their next match as they travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State on Friday at 7 p.m., ET. The game will be aired on ESPN3. No. 5 Louisville will then return home to Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium for a border battle matchup with No. 16 Indiana next Tuesday (Oct. 7) at 7:30 p.m., ET.
