The University of Louisville's Van Damrongrsi captured the singles title of the USTA Mid-Atlantic Asian Festival Scholarship Tennis Classic in Fairfax, Va.
"This was a big draw of players from all over the country," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "This is Van's second final but this time he came home with the championship. He has picked up where he left off at the end of last season. He was a reliable starter for us at the end of last year and he seems to be playing with much more confidence. I am happy about this because I want to try to use Van in more of a leadership role in the team."
Damrongsri, a rising junior from Ellicott City, Md., won five matches in straight sets to advance to the finals where he defeated top-seeded Landon Schaefer 6-3, 6-4. Damongsri earned the tournament's No. 6 seed and opened the 64-player draw with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Joel Locsin. He cruised past Corey Bonnett 6-0, 6-0 and William Szamosszegi 6-0, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals where he beat the No. 2 seed Carlos Bracho 6-3 in the first set and was up 3-2 in the second when Bracho defaulted. Damrongsri went on to defeat seventh-seeded Joe Dorn 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals to advance to the title match.
