LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team fell to No. 13/16 UCLA 19-2 Saturday night in an NCAA elimination game. The Cards close the season with a 47-13 overall record. UCLA (39-19) will take on UAB (39-16) in the regional final Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
"I really think I don't really have to say what happened," We just had no pitching. You know, we lost our pitching. We knew we were in trouble after our earlier game and it was going to be a battle because we really extended as much as we could with Rachel (Le Coq). In this game if you don't have pitching it becomes a very short - or long - game."
The Bruins jumped to a 3-0 lead when walks issued to B.B. Bates and Ally Carda set up Mysha Satarka's three-run homer over the centerfield fence.
UCLA tacked on nine more runs in the second when walks to Devon Lindvall and Gracie Goulder and an error on Alexis Bennett's sacrifice bunt loaded the bases with no outs. Bates reached on a fielder's choice which say Lindvall out at the plate. LaRosa's fielder's choice sent Goulder home to increase the lead to 4-0. Satarka drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 5-0. Britney Rodriguez's two-out single brought home two more runs. Lindvall was hit by a pitch to score a run. Goulder came back around to hit a two-run single and Bennett followed with a two-run hit to make the score 12-0.
Carda's two-run homer increased the lead to 14-0 in the third. Goulder's RBI single added another run. Bennett followed with a three-run homer to make the score 18-0.
The Cards put two runs on the board in the fourth when Alicja Wolny and Jordan Trimble delivered back-to-back one-out singles and Chrisanna Roberts reached on an error to load the bases. Maggie Ruckenbrod's fielder's choice sent Wolny and Trimble home to make the score 18-2.
The Bruins added another run in the fifth on Bennett's RBI single.
Caralisa Connell (25-5) took the loss, allowing 13 runs, seven earned, on five hits and striking out three in 3.2 innings.
Ally Carda (23-10) got the win, holding the Cardinals scoreless and scattering one hit in 3.0 innings of work. Bennett was 3 for 3 with five RBIs to lead the Bruins at the plate.
"It isn't the end we wanted but I think we can be very proud of a lot that they accomplished this year," said Pearsall. "There were a lot of firsts this year, and we still had a tremendous record. This team has already done more things than any teams we've had, in terms of wins... The number of top 10 wins that this team has done is phenomenal. What they've done and this senior class, who has had unbelievable careers and are the winningest senior class we've had and have done a tremendous job. So, there's nothing to hang your head about at this point. Things happen sometimes and bottom line is they still fought, they never let down, and they kept fighting away. That's all I could ask for."
