
Lacrosse Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker to Notre Dame

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 16-15 double overtime loss at the hands of seventh-ranked Notre Dame on Friday afternoon in Louisville, Ky. Louisville fell to 7-4 on the season and 0-3 in BIG EAST play.
"We're right there," said head coach Kellie Young. "We just need to turn the corner one more step. We are so far from last year. This team is competing with top-10 teams over and over again."
The Irish's Betsy Mastropieri rattled home the game-winner with 2:41 remaining in the second overtime.
Louisville fired away on Notre Dame backup goalkeeper Allie Murray in the first overtime. Murray made point blank saves on shots by Nikki Boltja and Cortnee Daley before Katie Oliverio sailed her shot wide as time expired.
Boltja connected on a season-best six goals including one with 8:59 remaining to tie the score at 14 after the Cardinals fell behind.
Oliverio matched her season-best with four goals including one with 2:20 remaining in regulation which tied the game at 15.
Notre Dame's Barbara Sullivan won the ensuing draw control but Monica Negron forced a Kaitlyn Brosco turnover deep in the Louisville end with 20 seconds remaining to halt the Irish and send the game to overtime.
"It's just remarkable," Young said. "You play your hearts out. I'm so proud of my team. We made some errors that hurt us, but we executed in so many ways and you play the No. 7 team in the country to double overtime."
The seesaw affair featured seven ties and two lead changes. Louisville led by as much as three while Notre Dame was never able to muster a multi-goal lead.
Boltja gave Louisville its first three-goal lead early in the second half. Notre Dame's Kiera McMullan led the Irish attack back within one at 10-9 but Boltja and Kaylin Morissette put Louisville back up by three with 16:35 remaining in regulation.
Louisville's offensive attack chased Notre Dame starting goalkeeper Ellie Hilling from the game midway through the second half as the Cardinals had an answer for every Irish goal.
Louisville remains at home to take on Marquette on Sunday, April 7 at noon.
Women's Lacrosse Overtime Breakdown
- Women's collegiate lacrosse overtime consists of six minute periods of stop-clock action.
- The teams switch ends at the three minute mark.
- The entire six minutes of the first overtime is played and if the score is still tied, it becomes sudden death of periods of six minute lengths with teams switching ends at the three minute mark.
- Today marked the third overtime contest in program history. Louisville is still in search of its first overtime win.
- Monica Negron won a career-best nine draw controls. The total is five shy of her 14 draw controls she won her entire freshman year.
- Kaylin Morissette and Negron have each won 42 draw controls this season. The mark is good for sixth in program history. With six games remaining the duo will look to chase down Emily Dashiell who set the single-season mark with 79 in 2011.
