SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of Louisville posted a runner-up finish in the 2013 BIG EAST Championship after falling 4-0 to host Notre Dame Sunday morning. The Cardinals (15-13) will await the NCAA selection show on April 30 at 5 p.m.
"It hurts not to win the Big East championship," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were going for our fourth in a row and really wanted to bring that trophy back to campus, but playing a good team on their own indoor courts was a mountain too high for us to climb today. We probably would have won two matches if they were not stopped. We are an outdoor team and we were hoping the finals would be outdoors. The finals being indoors was a much more comfortable venue for the Irish as they usually play well on their fast indoor courts. Three long grueling matches in less than 48 hours took a little toll on us. We are still in strong contention for an NCAA tournament at large bid."
Notre Dame(19-7) took the doubles point to start the match. Sophomore Chris Simich and freshman Alex Gornet fell 8-2 to Ryan Bandy and Spencer Talmadge at No. 2 while sophomores Van Damrongsri and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer lost an 8-4 decision to Alex Lawson at the top seed.
In singles, Damrongsri fell 6-3, 6-1 to Bandy on court six as the Irish took a 2-0 lead. At the top seed, Stiefelmeyer lost 6-3, 7-5 to Greg Andrews. The match was decided at No. 2 where sophomore Albert Wagner fell 7-5, 6-3 to Quentin Monaghan.
