Women's Lacrosse Crushes Presbyterian on Saturday

CUMMING, Ga. - Eleven players found the back of the net as the University of Louisville women's lacrosse team routed Presbyterian 23-1 on Saturday afternoon at West Forsyth High School in Cumming, Ga.
"I'm really proud of the team, not only for the win, but just such discipline and commitment to our plan today," head coach Kellie Young said. "We never want to embarrass an opponent, but to have my starters and reserves going so hard - especially with my reserves, who don't get a lot of minutes to have the discipline not to shoot for the last 15 minutes of the game. I was really proud of them."
The Cardinals (5-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Erika Eipp found Colleen O'Malley and Amy Poteet before scoring her first goal in the contest over a 50 second stretch. Within the next two minutes, the freshman added another goal and an assist to have a hand in Louisville's first five goals.
From there, it turned into shooting practice with numerous Cardinals breaking loose for one-on-one situations with the Presbyterian goalies. The Cardinals took a 10-goal advantage just under 12 minutes into the game. Nikki Boltja added a hat trick for Louisville's eighth, ninth and 10th goals on the contest and finished with a team-best five goals.
The offensive onslaught continued with the Louisville's non-starters scoring the remaining four goals of the half. Emily Kolsevich and Jamie Redding netted their second goals of the season in the first half.
The Cardinals continued to apply the offensive pressure on Presbyterian to start the second half with nine more goals. Boltja, Cortnee Daley and Faye Brust each scored two goals in the second half while Laura Patterson and Dani Lazo scored their second and first goals of the season respectively. Katie Oliverio contributed three assists.
With the game out of reach, the Cardinals focused on their stick work and passing for the remainder of the game. Louisville only had four turnovers in the second half.
"It was excellent," Young said. "Again, we had all of our subs in for the last 21 minutes of the game. To have them do it, who haven't been on the field in these big games we've been playing, shows that they are paying attention in practice, they are working hard and they have put their time in. They represented us today. It's a really proud moment for me as a coach."
Louisville's defense stood strong all afternoon and was pitching a shutout until Presbyterian's Catherine Ellis found the back of the net on a free-position shot with 1:11 remaining in the game. Overall, Louisville only allowed 10 shots for the game and forced 15 turnovers.
Junior Ashley Herbst finished with three saves, including a point-blank save off of the shaft of her stick in the first half.
"What a great moment for her," Young said. "When the ball is not on your end for so long, it can be easy to sort of get into a lull. She was on her toes and right where she needed to be. I was so happy for her."
Louisville remains on the road when it travels to Detroit for a 2 p.m. contest on Wednesday, March 13.
Game Notes
- The game served as the culmination of the third-annual Southern Draw, which features high school games, youth games, an NCAA game and a youth clinic. Louisville has participated in the NCAA game all three years.
- Louisville has won each of its three games at the Southern Draw by at least 10 goals.
- The one goal Louisville allowed was the lowest opponent goal total in program history.
- The Cardinals continued their dominance on draw controls this season and now have three games with at least eight more draw controls than their opponents.
- Louisville has allowed three goals of fewer in three of its five wins.
- Freshman Kaylin Morissette continued her dominance and finished with three draw controls and three goals.
