BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team picked up 10 wins to wrap up the Florida Atlantic Invitational Sunday.
"We had our third good day in a row going 10-4," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "This combined with us going 9-3 and 9- first two days, equates to quite a few wins. These types of January events always give us early season momentum. Most of our guys' bodies held up in this grueling event in hot and humid conditions. I am proud of them. I want to acknowledge Luis and Chris who were our tournament MVP's."
Louisville took on Indiana in singles and got wins from sophomore Luis Elizondo who beat Isade Juneau 6-4, 6-4 in the `A' division. In the `B' division, sophomore Chris Simich topped Dan Bedmarczyk 6-4, 6-2 and freshman Alex Gornet defeated Elliott Yee 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Michael Lippens cruised past Alek Davila 6-0, 6-0 while freshman Jeffrey Brown bested Chris Essick 6-3, 7-6.
Freshman Gonzalo Garcia registered a 6-1, 6-0 win over Radford's Joe Mills.
The Cards got win from all four doubles teams when they squared off against host Florida Atlantic. Gornet and sophomore Albert Wagner defeated Jose Fantova andRichard Meade 8-0. Elizondo and Simich beat Andrei Morin-Koufpucheff and Sean Bacha 8-5. Brown and junior Amaury Derognat edged Matthew Sambert and Robert Dubuque 9-7 and Lippens and sophomore Van Damrongsri picked up an 8-2 victory over Will Neuner and John Novak.
The Cardinals will open the dual match season on January 13 when they play host to Nebraska at 12 p.m.
