LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Chris Simich and freshman Jeffrey Brown captured the singles championships of their respective flights while Simich and freshman Alex Gornet finished runner-up in doubles to wrap up the 2012 Louisville Fall Invitational Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"It was nice to see these players apply some of the things we have been working on at practice," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Chris completed his goal by bettering his runner-up finish of last year. Alex may have had the best showing ever for a freshman with an `A' division singles and doubles runner-up finish. He got the attention of quite a few people. Jeff Brown showed his potential with a `B' Division singles title in singles and semifinal in doubles. He perks up when it is game time. I saw a lot of good things to build on this weekend."
The day started with doubles action. In the `A' finals, Simich and Gornet teamed against Tennessee Tech's Syryn Abdukhalikov and Alejandro Augusto. The Cards found themselves down 7-4 and rallied to make the score 7-6 before falling 8-6.
The `A' and `B' singles divisions featured all-Louisville showdowns in the championship matches. The `B' flight opened the Cards' singles play. Brown faced teammate sophomore Van Damrongsri in the `B' flight finals and took the first set 6-1. The pair battled in the second set, but Brown prevailed 7-6 (6) to claim the title.
