After two days of Olympic swimming at the Aquatic Centre in London, the University of Louisville Cardinals have one event remaining.
Pedro Oliveira, representing Portugal, went 1:58.45 in the 200-back and won his heat. He improved six spots, going from 28th to 22nd. He endeared himself to Cardinal fans by flashing the Louisville "L" hand signal to the world when they filmed his reaction to winning his heat.
Oliveira has the 200-meter backstroke on Wednesday morning and must make the top 16 to advance to the semi-final.
Carlos Almeida, representing Portugal, went 1:01.40 in the 100-meter breaststroke. He finished 25th in the world and improved from his No. 31 seed.
Eszter Povazsay, representing Hungary, put in a courageous performance when she swam despite breaking both hands in early July -- injuries which required surgery. She still went 1:03.55 and finished sixth in her heat.
U of L coach and National Coach of the Year, Arthur Albiero is coaching the entire Portuguese contingent as well the two Cardinals on the squad. Albiero got the shout-out from NBC Commentator Bob Costas during the Parade of Nations.
