CHICAGO - - The No. 11 University of Louisville softball team fell 3-0 to host DePaul in a BIG EAST Conference game Sunday. The Cards drop to 29-2 on the season and 4-2 in league play. DePaul improves to 18-11 (2-1).
DePaul got all the scoring it need in the first inning when Kirsten Verdun belted out a three-run home run. Lynsey Ciezki reached on an error and Samantha Dodd walked to set up Verdun's shot over the left field fence.
The Cards had a chance to push a run across in the sixth when Maggie Ruckenbrod and Whitney Arion led off the frame with back-to-back singles, but DePaul starter Verdun retired the next three batters to preserve the shutout.
The Blue Demons threatened to increase their lead in the sixth when Ciezki and Dodd opened connected on one-out singles and Verdun walked to load the bases. Reliever Tori Collins delivered a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.
Connell (10-1) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned on four hits and striking out two in 5.1 innings of work. Ruckenbrod and Arion registered the lone hits for the Cards.
Verdun (11-5) got the win, holding Louisville scoreless for the first time this season, allowing two hits and striking out six in a complete game errors. She was also 1 for 2 with three RBI.
