Women's Lacrosse Falls to Jacksonville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-10 decision at Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field in Jacksonville, Fla.
Jacksonville (6-1) scored the first goal of the game, and after a Nikki Boltja tally at the 25:44 mark, the Dolphins went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead, 10-2.
Faye Brust and Cat Gordon netted consecutive scores to try to spark a rally, but Jacksonville's Morgan Derner, who finished with a game-high five goals, found the back of the net with one second remaining to put the Dolphins up, 11-3, entering halftime.
After Jacksonville opened the second period with a pair of scores, Louisville (2-5) had a run of its own and tallied seven of the next eight goals. Gordon had scores eight and nine of the season within a two-minute span, and then Brust, Boltja and Amy Poteet found the back of the net over the next four minutes to close the gap to six at 14-8.
The Dolphins, however, went on another spurt, scoring four-straight goals to increase the lead to 18-8 and ultimately put the game out of reach.
Gordon, who finished the game with three scores, won eight draw controls and caused one turnover. It's the second time this season she has won that many draw controls, tying her own mark for third most in a single game in school history.
Boltja and Brust were the only other Cardinals to have multi-score games, finishing with two apiece.
Defensively, Casey Pepperman, Janaye Dzikewich and Monica Negron collected three ground balls each, while Poteet tied Hillary Bushway for a team-high two caused turnovers. Ashley Herbst earned her first start of the season in goal and was credited with the loss.
As a team, the Cardinals held the advantage in ground balls (15-12) and draw controls (19-13).
The Cardinals return to action with their BIG EAST opener on Saturday, March 24, at Notre Dame. Start time at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend, Ind., is set for 1 p.m.
