BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - - The No. 14/15 University of Louisville softball team defeated host Western Kentucky 6-0 to improve to 21-0 on the season Wednesday evening.
Senior Tori Collins and sophomore Chelsea Leonard combined to notch the Cardinals' 11th shutout of the season while juniors Alicja Wolny and Katelyn Mann and sophomore Hannah Kiyohara drove in two runs apiece.
"I was pleased with how we came out scored four runs early and set a great tone for the game," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We knew they would be a tough opponent and would constantly put pressure on us and we knew we would have to be aggressive."
The Cards put up a four-spot in the top of the first. Junior Jennifer Esteban and senior Kristin Austin delivered back-to-back singles and sophomore Taner Fowler drew a walk to load the bases for junior Wolny's two-run single. Kiyohara's two-out, two-run hit increased the lead to 4-0.
Louisville tacked on two more runs in the third when sophomore Jordan Trimble reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on Kiyohara's double. Both runners crossed the plate on Mann's double to make the score 6-0.
Western Kentucky (17-9) threatened in the home half of the inning. Katrina Metoyer singled, stole second and took third on Preslie Cruce's ground out. The Hilltoppers also had a runner in scoring position in the third and seventh, but that was as close as they would get as the Cards handed them their first shutout of the season.
Collins (10-0) got the win, allowing three hits and striking out three in 4.0 innings of work. Leonard struck out four and did not give up a walk or a hit en route to her second save of the season. Esteban was 2 for 4 with a run, while Wolny and Kiyohara were 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.
Emily Rousseau (8-4) took the loss, giving up six runs, four earned, on eight hits and striking out four in 6.0 innings. Metoyer led the Lady Toppers with a 2 for 3 performance at the plate.
The Cardinals (21-0) will travel to Sacramento, Calif. for the Sacramento State Capital Classic March 16-17.
