LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville volleyball team has announced the details and dates of its six camps, taking place during this summer in June and July.
The Cardinals, under the direction of head coach Anne Kordes, captured the 2011 BIG EAST regular-season title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. A Louisville native and the 2008 CVU.com National Coach of the Year, Kordes guided three players to all-BIG EAST first team honors - Lola Arslanbekova, Taylor Brauneis and Emily Juhl - and Arslanbekova, the BIG EAST Player of the Year, also was named all-region and a third team AVCA All-American. Kordes' staff is comprised of Dani Busboom-Kelly, Kyle Walton and Sarah Petkovic, and all have major NCAA Division I experience, helping guide their respective teams to multiple NCAA Tournaments.
The Individual Skills Camp, the first of two such camps, is scheduled to take place June 11-13 and focuses on five fundamentals: attacking, passing, setting serving and blocking. Attendees will learn immediate offensive and defensive systems and will be put through high intensity drills from the coaching staff and current Louisville student-athletes. The other Individual Skills Camp takes place a month later on July 16-18 and will focus on similar training areas.
Louisville will play host to back-to-back clinic dates in mid-June, with its serving clinic taking place on June 14 and the setting/hitting clinic being held on June 15. The serving clinic provides instruction on serving only, ranging from beginning to advanced levels. The setting part of the setting/hitting clinic will teach the fundamentals of various setting techniques and escalating into a higher level of training. The hitting section, meanwhile, will focus on approach footwork, arm swing and shot selection. In the afternoon, the two groups will combine to work on timing and offensive systems.
The high school team camp, the first camp to be held in July, will be held from the 9-11. This camp is structured to give teams a chance to prepare for the upcoming season and is open to every high school team and player. Each team will compete in skill training and scrimmages throughout the day and a tournament will be held on the final day of the camp (minimum of eight players per school).
On July 12 and July 13, Louisville will hold a specialty camp and all participants will receive individual instruction from the Louisville coaching staff based on specific positions. An intense three-hour session will be taught through advanced and detailed instruction, focusing on the fundamentals and tactics of each skill. Topics including setting, middle hitting, outside and right-side hitting and those specific to liberos.
