MIAMI - - Senior pitcher Tori Collins registered a career-high 13 strikeouts while Jordan Trimble and Taner Fowler connected on back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth to give the 24th ranked University of Louisville softball team a 2-0 win over Massachusetts Sunday in their final game of the FIU Combat Classic. The Cards improve to 5-0 on the season while UMass drops to 3-2.
The game featured a pitcher's duel with Collins scattering three hits and Sara Plourde surrendering five hits with 12 strikeouts.
The teams played through five scoreless innings before Jennifer Esteban sent a fly ball into shallow centerfield that fell in for a one-out double. One out later, Trimble stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single. Taner Fowler followed with a double to put the Cards up 2-0.
The Cards had few chances to score before the sixth. Esteban led off the game with a double, and Sara Plourde retired the next 13 batters until the fifth inning when Kayla Soles drew a walk and Trista Cox followed with a single to place two runners on with one out. Plourde delivered a strikeout and a runner was caught stealing to end the threat.
UMass had a runner in scoring position in the second and fourth and had runners on at first and second with one out in the seventh when the game ended because a two hour `drop' time had been established for the Sunday games due to travel arrangements.
Collins (3-0) got the complete game win, holding the Minutewomen scoreless on three hits and striking out 13. Esteban was 2 for 3 with two doubles and a run to lead the Cards at the plate.
Plourde (2-2) took the loss, giving up two earned runs on five and striking out 12 in 7.0 innings.
U of L (5-0) will travel to Greenville, N.C. for the East Carolina Pirate Clash Feb. 17-19.
