The University of Louisville women's team beat BIG EAST rival Notre Dame, 162-138. Each team won eight events, but the No. 19/22 Cardinals used their depth in the distance freestyle events to pull away from the No. 18/20 Irish. The Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team posted a 155.5-145.5 victory over No. 23/16 Louisville in a dual meet at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
"Our women competed very tough and we did a much better job of keeping our intensity and focus throughout the entire meet. This was a good team win on the road," said Louisville head coach Arthur Albiero. "Our men battled all the way through. We performed at a high level and quite a few of our performances were of national impact level. I am proud of the way our group responded to adversity."
In the 200 Medley Relay, the U of L men's foursome of Caryle Blondell, Kameron Chastain, Pedro Coutinho and Samuel Hoekstra put up a 1:29.42 for a second place finish. The U of L women were fourth as Krissie Brandenburg, Lucy Kramer, Tanja Kylliainen and Grite Apanaviciute combined for a time of 1:44.18.
In the 1,000-free, Louisville's Bryan Draganosky (9:18.61) cruised to a victory in the distance. For the women, Louisville swept the top three spots in the 1,000 free as Victoria Mitchell finished first in 10:05.77, Abby Chin took second in 10:10.40, and Carly Munchel finished third in 10:15.64.
In the 200-free it was a battle of 2012 All-Americans and a rematch of the BIG EAST final from last season and ND's Frank Dyer (1:36.85) edged rival Joao De Lucca (1:36.98). For the women, Louisville's Kelsi Worrell (1:47.78) and Breann McDowell (1:50.63) took first and second in the 200 free to pick up 13 points towards the Cardinals' score
In the 100-back, Bertie Nel (50.42) out-touched Louisville freshmanm Nolan Tesone (50.45). For the women, Louisville's Eszter Povazsay was just out-touched at the wall. ND's Kim Holden finished in 55.23, while Povazsay touched in 55.31.
In the 100-breast: Louisville's Kameron Chastain blazed a new Rolf's Aquatic Center pool record en route to recording a time of 54.53 to win the event. For the women, ND's Emma Reaney (1:00.95) beat out Louisville's Gisselle Kohoyda (1:04.08). The win was revenge of sorts for Reaney, as Kohoyda was the only swimmer to defeat Reaney head-to-head at last year's BIG EAST Championships.
In the 200-fly, Louisville's Kevin Bandy (1:49.93) held off a late surge by ND'sJohn Williamson (1:49.94). For the women, Louisville's Tanja Kyllianinen took first in the 200-fly by over two and a half seconds, winning the event in 1:59.04. The Cardinals' Devon Bibault took third in 2:02.42.
There was a tie in the 50-Free when one hundredth of a second was not enough to differentiate between ND's Chris Johnson and U of L's Samuel Hoekstra, who hit the pads simultaneously to tie for first with identical times of 20.92..
In the women's 1M Dive, ND's Jenny Chiang won the 1M dive, posting 338.25 points with Louisville's Hannah Gadd taking second with 308.85 points. For the men, the top Cardinal Diver was Nikolas Sachs who was third with a 291.15. Freshman Sean Piner was fourth with a score of 288.60.
For the 100-free, Louisville's Caryle Blondell bested a 13-year old Rolfs Aquatic Center pool record as he blasted to a win in 43.62. For the women, Louisville's Kelsi Worrell (50.42) took first in the 100 free to pick up nine points for the Cardinal, teammate Grite Apanaviciute (51.51) was third.
In the 200-back, Louisville's Nolan Tesone posted a winning time of 1:48.20. For the women, the Cardinals took third, fourth and fifth place to claim the final six points of the event.
=In the 200-breast, Zach Stephens broke the 2-minute mark and the Rolfs Aquatic Center's pool record in a sterling time of 1:59.53 to post the victory for Notre Dame. Kameron Chastain was second with a time of 2:01.53 4. Reaney edged Kohoyda in the 200 breast, touching the pad in 2:13.57, followed by Kohoyda in 2:16.70. Louisville's Lucy Kramer took third in 2:20.34.
In the 500-free, ND's Frank Dyer led from block to wall, clocking a 4:29 for win for the Irish. Louisville took the top three spots in the women's 500-free as Victoria Mitchell (4:57.02), Abby Chin (4:57.90) and Carly Munchel (4:59.82) grabbed up 16 points for the Cardinals.
In the 100-fly, Albert Lloyd (49.84) of Louisville held off a late rally by Bill Bass (49.89) to secure the win while relegating Bass to silver. For the women, Louisville's Kelsi Worrell took first in the 100-fly with a time of 54.14.
Louisville's Lindsey Stephens got the best of the Irish divers in the women's 3-M competition as she scored 337.95 points to out-distance the field ... Jenny Chiang took second with 316.73, while the Cardinals' Hannah Gadd placed third with 293.93 points, Louisville's Emily Stalmack took fourth with 284.25 points. The Irish men swept the top three places, with U of L's Sean Piner placing fourth with a score of 303.98. Cardinal Nikolas Sachs was fifth with a score of 291.90.
In the 200 IM, U of L's Tanja Kylliainen (2:03.02) was second and teammate Erica Belcher also took third. For the men, Alex Burtch was second with a time of 1:50.43, just .16 off the lead. Nolan Tesone was third with a time of 1:51.11.
In the 400-free relay, Louisville finished off its meet win with a victory in the 400 free relay, the Cardinals foursome of Kelsi Worrell, Grite Apanaviciute, Krissie Brandenburg and Eszter Povazsay touched in 3:23.15 while Notre Dame's A squad finished just behind in 3:25.14. Louisville also took third in the event.
The Cardinal men set a pool record and took first in the 200-free relay when Caryle Blondell, Kameron Chastain, Samuel Hoekstra and Joao De Lucca pulled away from the field with a win of 1:19.93. Blondell established anew pool record leading off the relay with a time of 19.90. Th
