LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville women's soccer team overcame an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against 11th-ranked Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park.
The Cardinals moved to 3-2-3 in BIG EAST Conference action with the tie and 8-3-3 overall, while the Hoyas remained unbeaten in league action at 6-0-1 and moved to 12-1-2 on the season. Sunday marked the first time this season Georgetown has allowed a goal to a conference opponent.
"I thought we played really well today," said Cardinals' head coach Karen Ferguson Dayes. "Our possession was fantastic and we created some great chances. The only thing that didn't go our way today was the result. Georgetown is a very good team and they brought out the best in us."
Georgetown opened the scoring early in Sunday's nationally televised match on CBS Sports Network when Daphne Corboz dribbled to the left and fired into the upper right corner of the goal in the 12th minute for the 1-0 lead. It was the 15th goal of the season for Corboz, who entered the week tied for the NCAA lead in goals scored at 14.
The Hoyas carried that one-goal lead into the halftime break and through the first 16 minutes of the second half before Louisville junior Charlyn Corral (Mexico City, Mexico/Tecnologico de Monterrey) connected inside the left post from 16 yards out in the 62nd minute to even the score at 1-1. The unassisted goal for Corral was her fifth of the season and the second of the weekend. She provided the Cardinals' game-winning goal in Friday's 1-0 triumph over Villanova.
Following Louisville's goal, the score remained even for the final 28 minutes of regulation as well as the two 10-minute overtime periods. The Cardinals finished with a 20-10 advantage in shots, while shots on-goal were even at 6-6. Georgetown closed the game with a 9-7 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, senior Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) had four saves for the Cardinals, while Emma Newins had four stops for the Hoyas.
Up next, Louisville returns to the road for a pair of BIG EAST Conference road games in the Garden State against Rutgers (Friday, 5:30 p.m., ET) and Seton Hall (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
