LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Senior Amber Thomas's goal in overtime gave the University of Louisville a 4-3 win over No. 21 Ohio State Monday at Trager Stadium. The Cards improve to 11-7 on the season while Ohio State drops to 9-8.
"What a great result against a quality team like Ohio State," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "They are a very good team, they're well-coached, well-structured and have some really great players. It was a funny game with the ebbs and flows. We didn't look very good in certain stretches of the game, but we came back and played some really great hockey."
The Cardinals converted on their first penalty corner to take the lead in the third minute of the game. Sophomore Alyssa Voelmle took assists from freshman Elisa Garcia and sophomore Paige Monsen and fired a shot into the cage for her seventh goal of the season.
The Buckeyes responded six minutes later when Berta Queralt's pass was tipped by Maria Swartz to knot the score at 1-1.
Queralt went on to notch her first of two goals in the game to give Ohio State the lead at the 23:21 mark. Danica Deckard took the ball to the right side of the cage and found Queralt in front of the cage to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead.
Ohio State took the lead into halftime after outshooting Louisville 7-4 in the first half while the teams were even with two corners apiece. Cardinal goalkeeper Erin Conrad had four saves while OSU's Emma Voelker collected three first half stops.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half the Cards evened the score on another penalty corner. Senior Natasha Leickly pushed the ball into play and Monsen collected the ball and dished to sophomore Victoria Stratton who registered her second goal of the season and made it a 2-2 game.
The Buckeyes answered four minutes later when Queralt gained possession of the ball on the left side of the circle, dribbled down the end line and sent a shot past Conrad into the right corner of the cage for her second goal of the game to give Ohio State a 3-2 lead.
Louisville quickly responded three minutes later after drawing another penalty corner. Ohio State's Voelker stopped Stratton's initial shot and senior Haley Jurich connected on the rebound which Voelker also stopped. Junior Erin Schneidtmiller sent that rebound into the back of the cage to tie the score at 3-3 at the 51:49 mark.
The Cards had two more shots and one penalty corner in the final five minutes of regulation, but could not capitalize. In the second half, Louisville outshot Ohio State 8-2 and held a 6-0 advantage in corners.
With the score knotted at 3-3, the teams took the field for a 15 minute seven per side overtime period. The Cards were awarded a penalty corner in the fifth minute. Voelmle fired a shot which Voelker turned back, but Schneidtmiller was there for the rebound and sent a pass to Thomas who connected on her team-best ninth goal of the season for the game-winner.
In the game, the Cardinals outshot the Buckeyes 14-9 and held a 9-2 advantage in corners. Conrad had four saves while Voelker posted eight stops for Ohio State.
"To win that many penalty corners in a game like that is excellent, although we weren't executing as well as we'd hoped, but we kept fighting," said Sowry. "It wasn't pretty in the end, but anytime the ball goes over the line, we'll take it."
Louisville (11-7) will wrap up the regular season with a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Providence on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m.
