PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Providence 2-1 Saturday afternoon to clinch the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Conference Championship.
The Cardinals (12-7, 3-3) will face the No. 2 seed, fourth-ranked Connecticut (16-2, 5-1) who fell 3-2 to third-ranked Syracuse in the regular season championship match on Saturday. Louisville and UConn will play in the semifinals Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Trager Stadium. Top-seeded Syracuse (15-1, 6-0) and the No. 4 seeded Providence (9-8, 3-3) will square off at 5 p.m. Friday.
"We are just so proud of our team with the way we have applied ourselves in recent weeks," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "We knew what was on the line and we continued to stay focused on the process and the 'one game at a time' mentality. Providence was a tough opponent for us today, where we managed to absorb pressure at critical times and we kept persisting on attack. We are absolutely thrilled that we have made it back to the BIG EAST tournament and we are playing at home. To have this opportunity is fabulous and much deserved for this team."
Louisville and Providence played through 34 scoreless minutes in the first half before the Cards broke through on an unassisted goal by Alyssa Voelmle with 17 second left in the half. The sophomore's eighth goal of the season gave Louisville a 1-0 lead entering the break. In the first half, the Friars held a 4-3 edge in shots while the penalty corners went 2-1 in Louisville's favor.
The Friars used a penalty corner to pull even in the second half when Henni Tietze connected on assists by Kaleigh Fitzpatrick and Caitlin Malone to tie the game at 1-1 at the 42:11 mark
Seven minutes later, sophomore Becca Maddock dished a pass to junior Erin Schneidtmiller who knocked in the game-winner for her seventh goal of the season.
Louisville goalkeeper senior Erin Conrad collected six saves in the win while Kathi Weidman had one stop for the Friars. Providence outshot Louisville 7-6 edge in the second half and 11-9 in the game while Louisville held a 3-2 advantage in corners in the second half and 5-3 in the game.

Louisville in BIG EAST Conference Championship
The Cards will be making their eighth straight BIG EAST Championship appearance. Louisville has reached the semifinals every season since joining the league in 2005. For the seventh time in eight appearances, the Cards will face UConn. The Huskies hold a 5-0 advantage over Louisville in the conference tournament. Providence defeated the Cards 2-0 in 2007 - the only non-UConn matchup.
