STORRS, Conn. - The Louisville women's soccer team overcame a pair of second half deficits to earn a 2-2 draw at BIG EAST Conference foe Connecticut on a rainy Friday night at Morrone Stadium.
With their third tie of the season, which matches a school record with eight games remaining the regular season, Louisville moved to 3-4-3 overall and 1-0-2 in BIG EAST games. The host Huskies are now 4-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league action. The Cardinals have already played in six overtime games this season, the most for them since they played nine overtime games in 2007.
"I'm very proud of the way we fought back twice to tie the game," said Cardinals' head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We had some great chances in overtime to win it. We're really starting to play some good soccer and the results are going to come from that."
After the two squads played without a goal into the halftime break and for more than 23 minutes of the second half, UConn was the first to break through when Georgina Giddings scored in the 69th minute for her first goal of the season. Courtney Wilkinson-Maitland and Riley Houle were credited with assists on the goal, which was setup on a corner kick by the Huskies.
The 1-0 lead for Connecticut was short-lived as Louisville pulled even less than five minutes later when senior Jennifer Jones (Louisville, Ky./Assumption HS) took a cross from sophomore Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./ St. Ignatius of Loyola) and scored from 12 yards out in the 73rd minute. The goal for Jones was her first of the season and the sixth of her career, while the assist for Uremovich was her second of the season.
The Huskies responded with a quick answer of their own to regain the lead just two minutes later as Danielle Schulmann found the back of the net from 25 yards out on an unassisted goal for a 2-1 advantage in the 75th minute. It was the fourth goal of the season for Schulmann.
UConn maintained that one-goal lead for more than 13 minutes before Louisville sophomore Christine Exeter (Pickering, Ont./Pickering HS) evened the score at 2-2 with only 2:15 left in regulation. After moving from mid-field down the right side, Exeter scored from 12 yards away for her team-leading third goal of the season and the 10th of her career in the 88th minute.
In goal, senior Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) finished with nine saves for the Cardinals, while Jessica Dulski had eight stops for the Huskies. UConn finished with a 22-19 advantage in shots, including an 11-10 edge in shots on-goal, while Louisville had an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cardinals will conclude the weekend on Sunday at 1 p.m., at Providence. Following this weekend's action, Louisville will return home to host Marquette (Sept. 30, 7 p.m., ET) and USF (Oct. 2, 1 p.m., ET) at Cardinal Park.
