BRISTOL, R.I. - Sophomore forward Christine Exeter scored her fourth goal of the season to lead the Louisville women's soccer team to a 1-0 road win at Providence on Sunday afternoon at Bayside Field.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 4-4-3 overall and 2-0-2 in BIG EAST games this season, while the host Friars dropped to 4-4-4 overall and 2-2-0 in league action.
"Obviously, it's great to come out of a difficult road trip with four points," said Cards' head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Today, we created chances and got a well-deserved win. We're coming together well as a team and we look forward to a challenging weekend ahead as we host Marquette and USF."
The only goal of the match came in the 29th minute when Exeter (Pickering, Ont., Canada/Pickering HS) took a cross from senior Jennifer Jones (Louisville, Ky./Assumption HS) and scored inside the far left post from five yards out. It marked the third straight game with a goal for Exeter, who leads the team this season and has 11 career goals. The assist for Jones is her first of the season.
From that point forward, the Louisville defense made the lead stand as the Cardinals held Providence to only three total shots and just one on-goal. The shutout for senior goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) was her fourth of the season. Overall, the Cardinals finished with a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.
Up next, Louisville will return home to host Marquette (Sept. 30, 7 p.m., ET) and USF (Oct. 2, 1 p.m., ET) in a pair of BIG EAST Conference games at Cardinal Park.
