RICHMOND, Ky. - The Louisville women's soccer team opened the 2011 season in impressive fashion with a dominating 5-0 win at Eastern Kentucky on Friday night.
The Cardinals won their season-opener for the seventh straight season and improved to 5-0 all-time against the Colonels. Friday's win was the largest margin victory for Louisville since a 5-0 win over Xavier on Sept. 10, 2006.
"It's always nice to start the season with a win," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes, now in her 12th season at Louisville. "Going back to our first preseason scrimmage, we continue to get better with every game. It's great to see so many players, from the starters to the kids who are coming off the bench, play such an integral role in our overall success."
The season-opening win was a balanced effort offensively as five different Cardinals scored goals on Friday. Sophomore Jordan Pawlik (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger HS) opened the scoring in the 12th minute as she took a pass from freshman Zakiya McIntosh (Ajax, Ont./Pickering HS) and scored past EKU goalkeeper Lyndsay Vance from 12 yards out for the 1-0 lead. Louisville pushed its advantage to 2-0 in the 28th minute as freshman Kim Sharo (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall HS) took a pass from sophomore Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./ St. Ignatius of Loyola) and connected from 10 yards out for her first career goal.
Following the halftime break, U of L scored early in the second half as sophomore Christine Exeter (Pickering, Ont./Pickering HS) took a pass from freshman Erin Yenney (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) and found the back of the net from 10 yards away in the 51st minute for her eighth career goal and a 3-0 lead. Freshman Devyn Ciotti (Liberty, Ohio/Lakota West HS) joined in on the scoring parade in the 67th minute as she sent a ball into the goal from 25 yards away for her first career goal and a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals closed the scoring in the 79th minute as Uremovich worked the ball over the head of backup goalkeeper Annie Wickett from 20 yards away for the final five-goal margin.
Louisville senior goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) had two saves to earn her second career shutout. The Cardinals finished with a 21-5 advantage in shots, including an 11-2 margin on-goal. U of L also finished with a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Up next, Louisville will play at Toledo on Friday at 5:30 p.m., ET before hosting Illinois on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m., in the home-opener at Cardinal Park.
