TOLEDO, Ohio - Sophomore Angelika Uremovich scored her second goal of the season as the Louisville women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Toledo on Friday night at Scott Park.
With the tie, the Cardinals remained unbeaten at 1-0-1 for the season, while the host Rockets moved to 0-2-1.
"We started out very flat and reactive and because of that, it took us a long time to find our rhythm," said Cards' head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Toledo works extremely hard and they played very well tonight. We will regroup for Sunday (against No. 19 Illinois) and take from this some game lessons we need in order to make us a better team."
Louisville opened the scoring in Friday's matchup in the eighth minute as Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola) lofted a shot over the head of Toledo goalkeeper Kelsey Borowitz from 25 yards away for the 1-0 advantage. The goal was the second of the season for Uremovich, who had a goal and an assist in the season-opening win over EKU last Friday.
The Cardinals' lead was short-lived as the Rockets evened the score at 1-1 less than seven minutes later when Kristen Lynn took a pass from Rachel MacLeod and connected for her first goal of the season in the 15th minute.
From that point forward, the both squads held defensively playing with a goal for the final 95 minutes of action. Senior goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) finished with four saves for the Cardinals, while Borowitz had three stops for the Rockets. Toledo finished with a 15-12 advantage in shots, including a 5-4 edge in shots on-goal. The hosts also finished with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks and were whistled for one more foul (9-8) than Louisville.
Up next, Louisville will host No. 19 Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m., ET for its home-opener at Cardinal Park. The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Sunday will receive free Louisville soccer schedule key chains, while the first 150 students with their I.D. will receive a free Louisville Louligans t-shirt. After Sunday's game, the Louisville women's soccer team will host a free autograph session for fans.
