PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Louisville's 18th ranked doubles team of Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk defeated sixth-ranked and fourth-seeded Hernus Pieters and Javier Garrapiz of Georgia 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the NCAA doubles championship Thursday at Stanford.
"We beat a great team today in a match that went back and forth," said Maksimcuk. "Only a few points were the difference. This helped ease the pain when we lost a team match 4-3 in Athens earlier this season. This was one of the best doubles matches of my life, winning against the No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament on court No. 1. We are one win away from being doubles All-Americans so I am hoping for the best."
Seniors Childs Maksimcuk improve to 18-9 on the season and will face the winner of the match between USC's No. 25 Steve Johnson and Ray Sarmiento and Ohio State's No. 11 Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola in Friday's round of 16.
"We started well and were up 4-2 in the first set, but lost 4-6. We got up again 4-1 and finally held on 6-4. We got down 0-3 in the third set and then played clutch tennis and closed out the match 6-4. The key was Viktor did not get down on himself and finished strong and breaking Pieters' serve twice in the final set. He held easily for two sets. I am so proud of these guys because they played so well and they have not played together in over two months.
