The University of Louisville's Austen Childs defeated Georgia's 18th ranked Wil Spencer 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Singles Championship. Childs will face Kentucky's Alex Musialek in the second round Thursday - the time for that match has not been announced.
"I was a bit nervous and started slowly," said Childs. "I felt when I get going I should be fine. I ended the match better than I finished."
The 16th ranked Childs rebounded after falling in the first set to win his 13th straight match. He improves his overall record to 32-10.
"Austen continues his great record against one of the great programs in our sport," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "He beat Spencer in March in Athens, but today's match was much closer. He's feeling pressure in being last year's national runner-up. He also had not played since May 14 when he beat UK's Eric Quigley, so he has a little rust to shake off."
