The University of Louisville's Austen Childs will face Georgia's Wil Spencer in the first round of the NCAA singles championship Wednesday at 1 p.m .(ET). Childs will team with Viktor Maksimcuk to face the tournament's fourth-seeded Javier Garrapiz and Hermus Pieters Thursday at a time to be announced later.
"It looks like the NCAA wants to see a Georgia vs. Louisville matchup with Austen playing Wil Spencer and Austen and Viktor playing Javier Gerrapiz and Hermus Pieters who are the fourth seed," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We lost in a heartbreaker 4-3 to them in Athens. Austen defeated Wil in that match. Also they played in doubles against each other in the national indoor team championship. That match was suspended at 8-8. As a coach, I am better prepared this time The Associated Press wrote several times that I ran out of clothes in the last NCAA tournament when Austen made it to the finals. I brought plenty of clothes this time."
Childs the 2010 NCAA singles runner-up is making his fourth appearance in the 64-player tournament. The All-American and threes-time BIG EAST Player of the Year leads the team with a 31-10 overall record and a 22-5 mark in as their top-seeded player. Childs is currently 16th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings - he reached a career-high 8th this season and has remained in the top 20 in every ranking period this year. Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk are No. 18 in the ITA doubles rankings. The duo compiled a 17-9 overall record and went 11-4 at No. 1 for the Cardinals. They also teamed to win the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship in the fall.
Georgia is No. 6 in the ITA team rankings and reached the semifinals of the NCAA team tournament before falling to Southern Cal. Spencer is No. 18 in the ITA singles rankings and has compiled a 35-12 overall record and an 18-8 mark playing at Nos. 1 and 2.
The sixth-ranked duo of Gerrapiz and Pieters carry a 26-9 overall record and were 16-9 as the Bulldogs' top-seeded team.
