Women's Lacrosse Drops Decision to Ohio State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 20-ranked University of Louisville women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-11 decision to Ohio State at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals (8-2), who trailed by five goals - 9-4 - in the first few minutes of second period, made a 4-0 run to come within a goal of Ohio State. Jamie Redding scored her fifth of the season on a pass from Katie Oliverio to start the spurt. Bergan Foley then registered her 39th goal of the year, beating the goalkeeper low, and Liz Lovejoy found the back of the net at the 20:46 mark to cut the deficit down to two. Oliverio's unassisted goal at the 20:08 mark brought Louisville to within one, but Ohio State responded with five goals over the next eight minutes to increase its lead to six and hold on for the win.
Louisville finished the second period with seven goals, but the first-half deficit proved to be the difference.
The two teams opened the game by trading four goals - two apiece - in the first seven minutes of the match. Ohio State's Alayna Markwordt gave the Buckeyes the early 1-0 lead a little more than a minute into the contest, but Lovejoy tied the game on a pass from Oliverio. Markwordt struck again, but the lead was short-lived, as Foley found the back of the net on a free-position shot, tying the game at two apiece. Brittney Zerhusen put Ohio State ahead, 3-2, at the 19:35 mark, giving the Buckeyes a lead they would not relinquish.
Following Zerhusen's score, Ohio State (6-4) closed the first period on a 5-2 run, with Lovejoy and Emily Dashiell registering the Cardinal goals.
Lovejoy finished with a team-high four goals on six shots, while also recording two draw controls and a ground ball. It is the fourth time this season that the senior has led the Cardinals in scoring. Oliverio, Dashiell, who had a caused turnover, three draw controls and three ground balls, and Foley each registered two goals in the loss.
Defensively, Monica Negron picked up four ground balls and had three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Ashley Herbst played the entire time in goal, making 10 saves.
Louisville returns to action on Friday, April 8, to play BIG EAST foe and fifth-ranked Loyola (Md.). First draw at the Ridley Athletic Complex is set for 5 p.m.
Notes:
- Bergan Foley tied her career high with three caused turnovers. Foley previously recorded three caused turnovers against Connecticut on April 23, 2010. Monica Negron also tied her career high with three caused turnovers, notching three for the third time this season.
- Freshman Jamie Redding continued her perfect shooting streak against Ohio State. Redding has recorded five goals this season on just five shot attempts.
- Junior Katie Oliverio has dished out at least four assists in five games this season, finishing with four against the Buckeyes. Through 10 games, Oliverio is averaging 3.1 assists per contest.
- Liz Lovejoy continued to accumulate goals in bunches against the Buckeyes. The senior netted four goals on the afternoon for her fifth game this season with at least four goals.
