LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team fell to No. 18-ranked Georgetown, 19-12, on Sunday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field in Washington, D.C.
The Cardinals (8-4, 1-2 BIG EAST) had a rough start to open the game, as Georgetown had three goals - two from Sophia Thomas - in the first five minutes. Louisville received its first goal of the contest from Liz Lovejoy, who found the back of the net on a free-position shot at the 23:37 mark. Katie Oliverio and Emily Dashiell also registered goals in the first period, but two scores by Georgetown's Mary Beth Brophy and an additional pair from Jordy Kirr put the Hoyas (6-5, 4-0 BIG EAST) ahead, 9-4, at halftime.
Bergan Foley managed to take over the Louisville offense in the second, recording her first score of the game in the first three minutes of the second period. After beating the goalkeeper on a free-position shot, Foley again found the back of the net just a minute later, with an unassisted score.
Georgetown's offense, though, continued to plug away, firing 20 shots in the second period and scoring on 10 of its opportunities, with seven coming from different players.
Foley tacked on three more scores to finish with five for the game, all second-half goals, and Oliverio registered the Cardinals' final score at the 7:20 mark, with the Hoyas' defense holding Louisville scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Oliverio finished the contest with three goals and an assist, and Dashiell, who also tallied a hat trick, had a game-high five draw controls and two ground balls.
Georgetown was led by Thomas' seven points - five goals and two assists - and Kirr's six points - two goals and four assists.
The Cardinals used three goalkeepers, but Ashley Herbst spent the majority of the contest between the pipes, accruing nearly 54 minutes in goal and making 11 saves.
Louisville returns to action next week for the start of a two-game home stand, beginning with Rutgers (7-4) on Friday, April 15, at U of L Lacrosse Stadium. First draw is set for 5 p.m.
Notes:
- Senior Emily Dashiell's goal in the first half extended her school records to 38-straight games recording a point and 30-straight netting a goal. Dashiell's point-scoring streak began against Connecticut on March 29, 2009, and her goal scoring streak started at UC-Davis on May 1, 2009.
- Dashiell recorded five draw controls, giving her eight games with at least five on the season. Currently, Dashiell has amassed 62 draw controls for the Cardinals, one behind her single-season record of 63, set last season.
- Bergan Foley scored all five of her goals in the second half, marking the second time this season and fourth time in her career with at least five second-half goals. Today marked Foley's sixth game this season with at least five goals.
- It's only the fourth game this season the Cardinals have finished with more turnovers than their opposition.
