LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In a tough battle against seventh-ranked Stanford on a chilly Thursday evening, the No. 18-ranked University of Louisville women's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the year, 16-12, at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium.
The game became a back-and-forth battle early on, featuring three ties and three lead changes within the first nine minutes of the contest.
Louisville (6-1) took the quick 1-0 lead on a Bergan Foley goal at the 27:40 mark. Stanford immediately responded with a pair of scores to go ahead, 2-1, but Emily Dashiell's unassisted score at the 19:33 mark knotted the game at two apiece. Foley then recorded her second score, her 20th of the season, on a free-position shot to put the Cardinals ahead, 3-2. After Stanford's Leslie Foard tied the game back up, Sarah Flynn put the Cardinal back up, 4-3, a lead the squad would not relinquish.
In the second period, Stanford (8-0) pushed its lead to as much as six before Louisville attempted to mount a late comeback.
Colleen O'Malley registered her fourth goal of the year on a feed from Foley. The score sparked a 4-2 run, as Katie Oliverio, Nikki Boltja and Lianne Bobal each tallied goals, but it was not enough as Louisville went scoreless for the final 4:16 of regulation.
Foley finished with a game-high four scores, while Dashiell, who won five draw controls and collected five ground balls, and Bobal each netted two scores. Oliverio also had five ground balls in the game.
Defensively, Monica Negron led the charge, causing three turnovers, and Sammy Allen added two. Ashley Herbst played all 60 minutes, making 14 stops.
As a team, Louisville made 8-of-11 clears and won the ground ball battle, 26-22.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, March 27, opening BIG EAST competition against Cincinnati. First draw at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
