SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - Freshman Taner Fowler went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer as the University of Louisville softball team defeated host San Diego State 7-0 Friday in the San Diego State Classic II.
"We played with great energy tonight," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We came out and attacked the ball and made some great defensive plays. We also got yet another great performance from Tori Collins. Tonight we played like the team we are capable of being."
The Cardinals (16-8) took an early lead in the top of the second when Maggie Ruckenbrod and Taner Fowler delivered back-to-back one-out singles and Kristin Austin beat the throw on an infield hit to load the bases with one out. Hannah Kiyohara reached on a fielder's choice which saw Ruckenbrod safe on a play at the plate to give Louisville a 1-0 lead.
Fowler's three-run homer put the Cards up 4-0 in the top of the third. Chelsea Bemis and Colby Wherry reached on singles to bring up Fowler who blasted a two-out shot over the left field wall for her third home run of the season.
The Aztecs (14-14) had a chance to score in the bottom of the fourth when Jessica Carmello led off with a single and Lorena Klopp drew a walk to place a runner in scoring position with one out. Louisville starter Tori Collins delivered two strikeouts to end the inning.
Louisville padded its lead with three runs in the sixth. Austin drew a leadoff walk and came home on Kiyohara's double. Bemis reached on a fielder's choice to place runners on the corners for Alicja Wolny's two-out, two-run double to increase the lead to 7-0.
Collins (9-5) scattered three hit and struck out seven en route to her fifth shutout of the season. Kiyohara finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
Samantha Beasley (3-6) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits and striking out two in 3.1 innings of work. Camello led the Aztecs offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
