SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - Junior Tori Collins struck out eight batters en route to her second straight complete game shutout as the University of Louisville softball team defeated Wisconsin 3-0 Saturday in the San Diego Classic II. The Cardinals (17-8) will face Ohio University Saturday at 7:30 (ET).
"I didn't think we played very inspired softball today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We played well enough to get the job done and that's unacceptable - we're a better team that that. Wisconsin did a good job of holding us offensively."
The teams played through two scoreless innings before Colby Wherry's two-run double in the third gave the Cards a 2-0 lead. Chelsea Bemis and Alicja Wolny drew back-to-back one-out walks to set up Wherry's double to left center.
The Badgers (14-9) got runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth when Stephanie Peace connected on a leadoff double, but Louisville catcher Maggie Ruckenbrod erased the threat when she fired a strike to pick her off at second. One out later, Mary Massei delivered a two-out double, but Louisville starter Tori Collins got Karla Powell to fly out to centerfielder Kristin Austin to end the inning.
The Cardinals added another run in the home half of the sixth when Tanner Fowler singled and was lifted for pinch-runner Chelsea Jordan who took second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. Hannah Kiyohara's two-out RBI single gave Louisville a 3-0 lead.
Collins(10-5) notched her sixth shutout and second in a row, limiting the Badgers to five hits and striking out eight in 7.0 innings. Kiyohara was 2-for-3 at the plate while Wherry was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Amanda Najdek (0-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out two in 2.1 innings of work. Michelle Mueller led the Badgers with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
