LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In a game that featured 45 combined fouls and rainy conditions, the University of Louisville women's lacrosse team fought past Old Dominion on Monday afternoon at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium, posting a 12-7 victory to improve to 2-0 on the year.
"It wasn't the prettiest game we've seen," coach Kellie Young says. "I think with all the distractions - the delays and the weather - we're happy that we pulled out the win.
"Old Dominion is a well-coached team. They fought hard. We were consistent enough to win it, but we need to clean this up if we want to reach our goals this season."
Louisville, similar to the season-opener, was able to get on the board early. On a free-position shot, Emily Dashiell gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead just 19 seconds into the game. Bergan Foley tacked on her seventh goal of the year a little over a minute later.
Old Dominion (0-1) goals by Alyssa Dragon and Lisa Bernardini tied the game at two apiece, but the Monarchs were never able to take the lead.
Lianne Bobal's first goal of the season at the 8:46 mark in the first helped Louisville regain the lead, 3-2, and from that point on, the Cardinals never looked back.
Foley finished the game with seven scores, giving her 13 for the year, and tallied 11 shots on goal. Dashiell added her second and final goal of the game late in the first half, but more notably, she finished with a school-record 10 draw controls. Dashiell previously set the school record in the season opener, posting nine draw controls.
"Every time you get possession, you have a chance to score, so that was impressive," Young says of Dashiell's performance.
Liz Lovejoy and Katie Oliverio also joined in on the attack, with Lovejoy recording a goal, while Oliverio earned her third goal of the year and tacked on four assists, a feat she's accomplished four times in her career.
The Cardinals not only won the ground ball battle, 24-16, but dominated in draw controls, winning 15 of the 21 decisions.
Defensively, three different players - Abigail Wah, Jamie Ward and Dashiell - recorded two caused turnovers apiece.
Louisville returns to action on Friday, March 4, at home against Oregon. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium. The first 150 fans to attend will receive a free Louisville lacrosse window decal.
Notes
Louisville's first two opponents in each of the program's four years have combined to score only 11 goals.
For the sixth time in her career, Bergan Foley registered seven goals in a game. Her career high is eight, which she achieved against UC Davis on May 1, 2009.
Foley has now scored in 26-straight games.
Katie Oliverio registered her fourth career game with four assists. It is her third-straight game with at least four assists. She registered a program-best five against Villanova in last year's regular-season finale.
Emily Dashiell continued her early success on draw controls, posting a school-record 10. She previously set the record in the season-opener, registering nine.
Dashiell and freshman Monica Negron each had four ground balls in the win.
