AUSTIN, Texas - Tori Collins threw a one-hit shutout and Alicja Wolny homered as the University of Louisville softball team defeated Tulsa 5-0 in the semifinals of the Texas Classic Saturday.
"We were excited to see Tori come out and throw a great game today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We continue to play solid defense, we were able to swing the bats better, but still need to be more aggressive at the plate."
The Cards took a 2-0 lead in the second. Jordan Trimble led off with a double and scored when Chelsea Bemis reached on an error. Kristin Austin's sacrifice bunt moved Bemis to second and she crossed the plate on Colby Wherry's base hit.
Alicja Wolny's towering two-run homer over right center increased the lead to 4-0 in the third. Katie Keller drew a leadoff walk to set up Wolny's first home run of the season. Trimble followed with an infield single, moved to third on Bemis' hit and came home on a groundout by Taner Fowler to make it a 5-0 game.
Collins (1-1) had a no-hitter going until the top of the seventh when Jill Barrett was called safe for an infield single. Collins finished the game with three strikeouts and only allowed two base runners in the game. Trimble paced the Cards offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Aimee Creger (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits and striking out six in four innings of work.
The Cardinals advance to the championship game where they will face the winner of the game between Texas and Northern Illinois Sunday at 1 p.m. (Eastern).
