
Softball Falls to No. 15 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to host 15th ranked Texas 14-4 Sunday afternoon in the Texas Classic championship game. The Cards drop to 3-2 on the season while Texas improves to 5-0.
Texas erupted for five runs in the first inning. Taylor Hoagland and Lexy Bennett delivered back-to-back singles and Nadia Taylor was safe on an error to load the bases for Amy Hooks' RBI single. An error on the play also allowed Bennett to score. Back-to-back RBI doubles plated Taylor and pinch-runner Shelby Savony to make it a 5-0 game.
The Cards got three runs back in the top of the second behind Taner Fowler's three-run homer. Jordan Trimble singled and Chelsea Bemis reached on a fielder's choice to set up Fowler's first career home run to pull the Cards within two runs.
The Longhorns answered in the home half of the inning, utilizing eight hits, including three home runs, a triple and two doubles to score nine runs. The offensive output featured a grand slam by Hoagland and home runs by Nadia Taylor and Taylor Thom to increase the Texas lead to 14-3.
Louisville added a run in the third when Maggie Ruckenbrod reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on Alicja Wolny's double. Trimble walked to load the bases for Chelsea Bemis who was hit by a pitch to score Ruckenbrod and bring the score to 14-4.
Starter Chelsea Leonard (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits. Trimble and Alicja Wolny each had two hits in the game.
Blaire Luna (3-0) got the win, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and striking out four. Hoagland finished the game batting 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI to lead the Longhorns.
Louisville (3-2) is back in action Feb. 18-20 when the Cards travel to No. 3/6 Alabama for the `Bama Classic.
