WASHINGTON, D.C. - Emily Juhl had nine kills and five blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-19, 25-14, 25-23 win over the Hoyas to clinch the regular season BIG EAST title in volleyball action at Sunday afternoon at Georgetown.
The win gives the Cardinals' their third BIG EAST regular-season title after previously capturing it in 2005 and 2007. Louisville now has won either the BIG EAST regular-season or tournament titles for the last seven-straight years (three regular-season titles, four tournament titles).
"I'm really proud of our team for winning the BIG EAST regular season," head coach Anne Kordes said. "The BIG EAST is a competitive conference, with very talented and experienced coaches. To be able to win in this environment is a testament to the hard work our team put in this year."
U of L stands at 21-7 and 13-1 in the league. Georgetown drops to 14-13, 6-8. U of L clinched the No. 1 seed for the BIG EAST Tournament on Friday at Villanova and awaits its opponent pending the outcome of multiple matches Sunday evening. Lola Arslanbekova added a match-high 11 kills and 10 digs for another double-double.
In the first set, the teams traded points until U of L was able to find some breathing room, going up 17-12 powered by three straight Caitlin Welch aces. The Cards settled in and moved to a 21-15 lead and GU burned its last timeout. The Hoyas made some noise, scoring two straight, but the Cards shut them down 25-19.
U of L blew out to an 9-4 lead early in the second set and used a 5-0 run to pull out to a 16-11 lead. U of L put together a 9-1 run to go up 22-13 and then closed out the set with Juhl serving four of the last five points for the 25-14 win. Juhl paced the Cards with five kills and two blocks.
In the third set, GU ran out to an 8-2 lead but the Cardinals managed to scramble back and tie at 18 and then take the lead at 22-21 to force a GU timeout. The squads tied at 23 and U of L got to set and match point on a kill by Arslanbekova, who then aced the Hoyas for the match.
