The University of Louisville volleyball team returns to BIG EAST action Saturday when the Mountaineers head to Cardinal Arena to take on the Cardinals who are currently undefeated at 7-0 and have only dropped one set in BIG EAST play. Then the Cards will take on Pitt at 2 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center in a televised match on WHAS-11.
Even with a loss to Lipscomb on Tuesday, the Cardinals (15-5, 7-0) are still leading the BIG EAST and nation statistically. Junior Lola Arslanbekova is No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the BIG EAST with 5.10 kills per set and No. 3 in the nation and No. 1 in the BIG EAST with 5.65 points per set. Arslanbekova was named BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, Player of the Week four times and has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice this season.
The Mountaineers (5-13, 3-4) are coming off a win against travel partner and rival Pitt last weekend. Tied 12-12 in the fifth set, the West Virginia University volleyball team used kills from senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky and senior middle blocker Abby Monson to seal the win as the Mountaineers defeated Pitt 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12) for the second year in a row.
Pitt (13-9, 3-4 Big East) is coming off that loss to rival WVU where Panther sophomore Monica Wignot and freshman Lindsey Zitzke posted double-doubles that included career highs in digs. Zitzke also posted two aces in the match. With 37 total aces on the year, she is just one shy of tying Carrie Norris (2002) for ninth overall on the single-season record list. Zitzke tallied a season-best six aces against Eastern Kentucky on Aug. 26 and is ranked 24th overall among NCAA Division I leaders in that category. Libero Margy Acton is pacing the squad with 4.66 digs per set average and ranks among the league's top 10 passers.
