LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Playing her final regular season home game, senior Jennifer Jones had a goal and an assist to lead the Louisville women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Seton Hall on a windy Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park.
With their fifth consecutive win, the Cardinals improved to 7-1-2 in BIG EAST action to remain in first place in the National Division and improved to 9-5-3 overall. Along with the season-best five-game winning streak, Louisville has lost only once in its last 11 games overall. Rutgers dropped to 4-6-0 in BIG EAST games and 8-7-2 overall with the loss.
"I thought the wind was a major factor today, so playing with the wind in the first half gave us a big advantage and we were able to capitalize on it by really pressing and scoring some good goals," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "With that being said, I thought we were as good in the second when we were able to deal with the wind by winning the first balls and keep attacking. I'm so happy with the performance of this team over the weekend and this was a terrific win for our seniors today. We continue to get better and we're peaking at the right time."
The Cardinals gained control early in Sunday's game as freshman Erin Yenney (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) took a pass from Jones (Louisville, Ky./Assumption HS), beat a defender inside the 18-yard box and scored into the left side of the goal from 14 yards away for a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. The goal for Yenney was her second of the season, while the assist for Jones was her third of the season.
Louisville increased its lead to 2-0 less than 13 minutes later when freshman Jordan Pawlik (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger HS) took a pass from sophomore Christine Exeter (Pickering, Ont., Canada/Pickering HS) on a breakaway scored into the upper left corner of the goal in the 20th minute. It was the third goal of the season for Pawlik and the third assist for Exeter.
The final goal of the game came in the 29th minute when Jones scored into the lower left corner of the goal from 13 yards away for her second goal of the season and the final three-goal margin. The goal came when Jones controlled the ball after her first shot attempt was blocked by a SHU defender.
Defensively, the Cardinals had little trouble making the lead standup as goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) needed only one save to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Louisville finished with a 27-5 advantage in shots, including an 18-1 margin in shots on-goal. The Cardinals had a season-high 15 corner kicks while holding Seton Hall to just two.
Prior to Sunday's game, Louisville held its annual Senior Day activities where it honored Jennifer Jones, Kaitie McDonald, Caitlin Beck and Kassie Young.
Up next, Louisville will close the regular season on the road at Cincinnati on Saturday at 7 p.m., ET. The Cardinals have clinched no worse than the No. 2 seed in the National Division in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship and will host a quarterfinal game on Sunday, Oct. 30 at Cardinal Park. The time and opponent for the game will be determined following the completion of the regular season next week.
