The University of Louisville men's tennis team picked up eight wins, sending Dante Terenzio and Jonathan Kuhn to the singles finals and three doubles teams to the semifinals of the Louisville Winter Invitational Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cards opened the second day of their second home tournament with three doubles wins. In flight `A' doubles, senior Sumit Gupta and freshman Van Damrongsri teamed to beat Wright State's Martin Arguello and Lauri Makikalli 8-4 to set up Sunday's semifinal match against Xavier's Phil Diaz and Brandon MacDonald. On the other half of the bracket, senior Adam Donaldson and sophomore Amaury Derognat registered an 8-4 win over Wright State's Jami Clark and Hayden Jobblin. They will face Belmont's Renato Antun and Rafael Matos in the semifinals.
Sophomore Dante Terenzio and freshman Bradley Merchant edged Morehead's Hugo Almonte and Chris Shafik 9-8(2) to reach the `B' semifinals.
"I am really proud of the boys," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We have three teams in the doubles semifinals again. Each of them has considerable momentum. Our goal is to win all four divisions and we are in position to do that, but it will take a big effort."
In `A' singles action, Terenzio picked up straight-set wins over Richard Canelas and Jimmy Roebker - both of Xavier. He will face Xavier's Mesa Mei in the finals.
Sophomore Jonathan Kuhn also used a pair of straight-set wins over his opponents to reach the finals where he will meet Belmont's Rafael Matos who defeated Louisville freshman Ross Nigro in the semifinals.
"With Dante in the `A' division singles finals and Jonathan in the `B' singles finals is a breakthrough for both of them," said Ecarma. "Dante is managing himself better and the results are showing. He has not dropped a set yet. Jonathan is playing the best tennis of his young career and thrilled the crowd with some spectacular shots."
Sunday's action will start at 9 a.m. with the doubles semifinals, followed by the finals. The tournament will conclude with the singles championship matches.
