Men's Tennis Opens Play at Louisville Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team sent four singles players and four doubles teams to the quarterfinals of the Louisville Invitational Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"I'm happy with Van Damrongsri, Dante Terenzio, Ross Nigro and Jonathan Kuhn for advancing to the quarterfinals," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We started off well when we won the doubles. I think we have a chance of doing very well in this tournament, but the second day is very critical. Last month we had a strong second day and that propelled us to have four players in the `A' semifinals.
The Cards sent all three doubles teams to the Flight `A' quarterfinals. Senior Sumit Gupta and freshman Van Damrongsri picked up an 8-4 win over West Alabama's Nestor Vargas and Luis Ruiz. Sophomores Jonathan Kuhn and Ross Nigro teamed to beat Butler's Tommy Marx and Steve McLoughlin 8-5. Senior Adam Donaldson and sophomore Amaury Derognat defeated Morehead's Seve Day and Roger White 8-3.
"I'm hoping that this weekend we can take a doubles title and that some of these guys can have a breakout tournament," said Ecarma. "I think we're very conditioned. While some team may be starting to wear down at this point, I think our fitness will give us an edge."
In Flight `A' singles action, freshman Van Damrongsri and sophomore Dante Terenzio each won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Damrongsri beat players from Wright State and Butler and Terenzio picked up wins over players from Xavier and Bellarmine.
Freshman Ross Nigro Nigro and sophomore Jonathan Kuhn defeated players from Butler and Wright State en route to the `B' quarterfinals.
Play will continue Saturday with doubles play beginning at 9 a.m.
