The University of Louisville men's tennis team placed two singles players and two doubles teams in the 2010 ITA Preseason National rankings. Senior Austen Childs is No. 10 and Simon Childs is 63 in singles. The doubles team of Simon Childs and Alejandro Calligari steps in at No. 14 while Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk are No. 45 in the doubles rankings.
Austen Childs, a native of Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand, is coming off of a stellar junior campaign in which he finished runner-up in the 2010 NCAA Singles Championship and became U of L's second All-American. The two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year compiled a 33-12 overall record and went 22-5 as the Cards' No. 1 player and ended the season at No. 13 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings.
"Austen Childs officially becomes the highest ranked singles player in U of L history," said head coach Rex Ecarma. "He deserves this recognition but is not satisfied with it. I believe he can be ranked significantly higher. He has several goals in front of him for his final season as a Cardinal."
"The rest of the `Fab Four' were shown a lot of respect by the national voters particularly the doubles team of Simon Childs and Alejandro Calligari at No. 14," said Ecarma. "This team will have the entire season to move up and has shown great potential and chemistry. Simon becomes the first Cardinal to be ranked in the top 15 with 2 different partners. He was ranked #10 with Austen at this time last season. He is also ranked #64 in singles which is close to his career high. Viktor Maksimcuk and Austen are ranked No. #45 in doubles. I am confident that the Austen/Viktor doubles team will move up quickly. This is a good starting point for the `Fab Four' and they deserve this type of respect."
Simon Childs a senior from Hillington, England, posted a 24-16 overall singles record a was an All-BIG EAST selection. He was ranked as high as No. 49 in singles and finished the season at No. 87.
Simon Childs teamed with fellow senior Alejandro Calligari (Bradenton, Fla.) to form the Cards' top-seeded doubles team. The duo posted a 13-5 overall record and was selected to the NCAA Doubles Championship. They were ranked as high as No. 22 and finished the 2010 season at No. 31.
Austen Childs and senior Viktor Maksimcuk (Subotica, Serbia) combined to produce an 8-2 record as the Cards' No. 2 doubles team.
