STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Former University of Louisville baseball All-Americans Neil Holland and Phil Wunderlich started their professional baseball careers in impressive fashion as both were selected for the 2010 New York-Penn League All-Star Game.
A right-handed pitcher from Owensboro, Ky., Holland represented the National League All-Stars in Tuesday night's game at Richmond County Ballpark in Staten Island, while Wunderlich, an infielder from Chicago, Ill., played for the American League All-Stars. The All-Star recognition followed a strong summer for both players at the professional level.
Holland, who was selected in the 11th Round (326th overall) of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft in June by the Washington Nationals, is 2-0 with two saves, an ERA of just 1.85 and 30 strikeouts in 24.1 innings of relief this summer for the Class A Vermont Lake Monsters. Wunderlich, who was selected in the 12th Round (371st overall) of the 2010 Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, is hitting .340 with four home runs, 34 RBI and 19 doubles in 47 games for the Hudson Valley Renegades.
A First Team All-American selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 2010 and a Third Team All-American selection by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball newspaper, Holland finished the collegiate season ranked second nationally with a school record 17 saves to go along with an 8-1 record. In 56.1 innings of relief this season, the First Team All-BIG EAST selection had a 2.08 ERA and 59 strikeouts while opposing batters hit just .160 against him.
Wunderlich, a Baseball America Third Team All-American and a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2010, led the Cardinals with 21 home runs while hitting .355 with 62 RBI and 12 stolen bases on 15 attempts on the season. As a sophomore in 2009, Wunderlich led the Cardinals in hitting with a .367 average, was second on the team with 18 home runs and 78 RBI and was third on the team with 18 doubles en route to being named Second Team All-America by the NCBWA and Second Team All-BIG EAST.
Both Holland and Wunderlich were key contributors to the 2010 Louisville baseball team, which set a new school record for wins with a 50-14 record overall. The Cardinals closed the season by advancing to a fourth straight NCAA Regional and winning a second straight BIG EAST Conference regular season championship.
