ATHENS, Ga. - - University of Louisville junior Austen Childs continues his history-making run in the NCAA Singles Championship with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 quarterfinal win over Texas' Dimitar Kutrovsky Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
The 19th ranked Childs (Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand) won the first set 6-4. Tenth-ranked Kutrovski battled back for a 7-5 second set victory before Childs closed the match with a 6-3 decision in the third set.
"This was another pretty long match," said Childs. "He's very quick and gets to a lot of balls. He plays close to baseline and likes to dictate play with his forehand. Our game plan was to try and keep him off the baseline and get him outside of where he wanted to be. I started to come away with it in the third set and stretch him wide with my serve. I broke him once in the third and held on with my serve."
Childs becomes one of four players remaining in the NCAA championship, advancing to Sunday's semifinal match to face Auburn's 16th ranked Tim Puetz who defeated No. 11 Michael Shabaz 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals Saturday.
For the fourth time in five NCAA singles championship matches, Childs will meet an opponent he has already played - and lost to - in the 2009-10 season. On Nov. 1, Puetz defeated Childs 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the South Carolina Fall Invitational.
"Austen showed a lot of determination to win this match," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Kutrovsky was super fast and had a monster forehand and a great touch. I asked Austen to be very physical, chas all those cross court balls and hit big at the end of sets. His serve was working as well as his inside forehand. I think we won some fans here in Athens, but it would be great to have some Cardinal fans to support him in tomorrow's final four match."
Childs improves to 32-11 on the season and has now won 13 of his last 14 matches.
