"We had back to back stellar performances," said University of Louisville women's lacrosse head coach Kellie Young. "I am thrilled that our team, from our keepers all the way to our attackers, played with such discipline and focus."
The Cardinals (11-6, 4-4) finished their season with a school-record 250 goals, breaking the old mark of 245 set during the inaugural 2008 campaign. Today marked the fourth time this season that U of L scored over 19 goals in a game, and the fourth Cardinal victory when the Cardinals score 19 or more goals. Sophomore Katie Oliverio tied her single-game school record, dishing out five assists for the third time this season. Junior Bergan Foley tied her season-high with seven goals while sophomore Eleni Kozas and senior Ashley King scored their first career goals in the victory.
King, a native of Shoreham, N.Y., nailed her first career goal at the 19:29 mark of the first half, which extended the lead to five goals. King's goal, the Cardinals' seventh of the day, proved to be the eventual game winner.
Oliverio found Foley 29 seconds into the game to put U of L on the board, making it the third time this season that the Cardinals have found the back of the net within the first minute of the game. Oliverio notched her first goal of the afternoon 28 seconds later before Foley and Liz Lovejoy found the back of the net to give the Cardinals a four goal cushion. Erica Rybinski put Villanova (8-8, 1-7) on the board at the 18:37 mark of the first half.
Oliverio found the net for the second time of the afternoon before Villanova notched their second goal of the day. Louisville then went on a two goal run with Foley and King finding the back of the net.
After a Villanova goal cut the lead to four, Foley and Lovejoy connected on back to back free position shots, expanding the lead to six. The Cardinals went on a 3-0 run after the Wildcats cut the lead to four. Foley started the run on Oliverio's third assist of the afternoon. Senior Danielle Hale found the back of the net with 7:40 remaining off of a Lovejoy pass before Lovejoy found the back of the net 2:08 later to expand the lead to eight. The Wildcats cut the lead to seven just before halftime.
Louisville built on their lead coming out of halftime when Foley scored her 77th and 78th goals of the season on Oliverio's 45th and 46th assists. Emily Dashiell joined in the scoring with her 41st goal of the season with 21:41 remaining in the game. Oliverio added her third goal moments later to give her a third hat trick. Hale expanded the lead to 13 off of an assist from Foley less than two minutes later. After Villanova cut the lead to 12, Shayna Stearns found Kozas for her first career goal to round out the scoring.
"Bergan and Katie O connected flawlessly once again with Liz using her power to put the ball in the back of the net," said Young.
The U of L defense was solid on the afternoon not allowing the Wildcats to score in the final 21 seconds of the first half, as well as the first 25:36 of the second half, a span covering 25:57 of game time, the third longest goal drought by an opponent this season. Previously, the Cardinals held nationally ranked Georgetown scoreless for the final 27:29 of the game and shut out Sacred Heart in the second half.
"Our seniors shined in their last collegiate game," said Young. "Ashley and Colleen Nevin anchored a dominant defense, while Lyndsay Ward showed her tremendous speed through the midfield and Danielle tallied two beautiful goals to finish her career. I am so proud of them and thankful for all they've contributed to the Louisville lacrosse program. It was a great day to be a Cardinal!"
